!REFERENCE: 2019 obituary for Richard Neal Moon, "Cochran Funeral Home and Crematory of Blairsville announces memorial services for Richard Neal Moon of Blairsville who passed away peacefully at his home Monday morning, March 11th, 2019 from complications of Parkinson's and dementia. He was 84 years old, having reached that milestone in December. Mr. Moon is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Sue Prather Moon of the home and oldest sister, Betty Jean Moon Hale of Gratis, Georgia, as well as five nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Richard Carl (R.C.) and Mildred Ann Breedlove Moon and sister Charlotte Ann Moon Frost, nephew Jack Winter and niece Sherilyn Frost, all of Gratis, Georgia. Mr. Moon's children include Jeffery Neal Moon of Blairsville, David Mell Moon (Diane) of Hiawassee, Cynthia Jill Moon Wheeler (Rusty) of Blairsville, and Jonathan Carl Moon of Blairsville. Grandchildren include Dustin Wayne Rogers of Blairsville, Jessica Renee Moon (Richard) of Hiawassee, Dakota Aaron Wheeler (Courtney) of Blairsville, Alexa Higdon (Dustin) and Haley Milholland (Adam) of Louisville, Kentucky, and Fletcher Neal Moon of Blairsville. Great grandchildren include Kaleigh and Kenzie Beaver of Hiawassee, Allie Grace, Raegan and Caleb Wheeler of Blairsville, Kirra and Rowan Higdon and Jason Krauss of Louisville, Kentucky. Mr. Moon was a well-known community leader in Union County and the area, serving for 17 years as County Extension Agent with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service. In addition to assisting local farmers and homeowners with issues of agronomy and animal husbandry, Mr. Moon coordinated local 4-H activities in Union County Schools, taking countless students to 4-H camps. Mr. Moon was born in 1934 in rural Walton County, west of Athens, Georgia, in the small farming community of Gratis. His parents, R.C. and Mildred Moon, operated a 100-acre cotton farm and dairy operation where Mr. Moon and his two older sisters assisted with the daily chores. His family and friends affectionately knew him by his nickname "Buzz." Following graduation at Monroe High School, Mr. Moon attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Georgia, for two years, where he was a standout on the Golden Stallions' basketball and baseball teams. Mr. Moon continued his education at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, receiving a B.S. in Agriculture degree. Following university, Mr. Moon began his career with the Extension Service in Muskogee County in 1957 and then transferred to DeKalb County. For one year, Mr. Moon worked in the Walton County School System as a junior high teacher and coach in the Youth community and raised hogs on the family farm. Memorial services have been scheduled for Saturday, March 16th, 2019, to be held at 3:00 p.m., at the Rock Chapel of First Baptist Church of Blairsville. Rev. Jared Henson, Rev. Roy Bateman and Rev. Guy Burger will offficiate. Music will be provided by Minister Terry Hooper and Mrs. Jackie Hill. Military Honors will be presented by The North Georgia Honor Guard. Visitation with the family will be held starting at 1:00 p.m. before the service starts. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial contributions be made to Michael J.
