After graduating from Athens College he joined the gold rush to CA in 1849, but remained in CA only a short while, returning subsequently to GA. He was Captain of Company K, 43rd Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Tennessee, C. S. A., Hall County, GA, Brown's Boys. On the muster roll, he is listed as Captain 10-Mar-1862 and resigned 21-Sep-1862 or 23-Dec-1862. He re-enlisted, but the command was not stated. He was killed at Vicksburg, MS 03-Jul-1863."
