!REFERENCE: 07-Jul-2001 email from Stephen Payne to Don Braffitt, "Don -- This may be a long shot in contacting you, but I was curious about the information concerning Salena Seney that you placed on your web site. I saw your note indicating a bit of uncertainty about her spouse actually being this John Crumley. Please let me share a few thoughts about a mystery that several in our family have been trying to solve and you probably can understand why I'm contacting you. My great-grandfather was Dr. Isaac B. Payne who was born in Wilkinson Co., GA in 1837. His mother was Seney Crumbley Mitchell and she married Joseph Payne. We didn't know much about her until recent years, except that she probably was at least half Creek or Cherokee and her adopted father was an Isaac Mitchell. I found a record a few years ago that indicated that she was legitimated and adopted by this Isaac Mitchell in 1819. Her previous name was Seney Crumbley. In Wilkinson County, there were two John Crumbleys. The elder was born in about 1776 and the younger in about 1800. The younger John married a Judy Cone, but we don't have much info at all about the elder John Crumbley (a full list of his children or his wife's name). The only reason that I'm contacting you is the name of the Salena Seney who supposedly married a John Crumley. The appearance on official records in Georgia of a Seney Crumbley makes me wonder if there could be a connection to this woman. Seney and Crumley/Crumbley are not that common names. One Creek Indian specialist told me that the name Seney could well be derived from the black drink ceremony and green corn rituals of the Creek (the name being associated with Creek medicine healers). Do you know anything more about this Salena Seney? Whether or not there is a Creek association with our Seney Crumbley, it seems a questionable coincidence to me that there is a Seney-Crumley marriage in GA that is completely disconnected from an illegitimate and adopted girl named Seney Crumbley. Can you shed any more light on this Salena Seney Crumley or tell me where you discovered info about her that you listed? There's a strong chance that I'm barking up the wrong tree, but it would be helpful to be able to eliminate this long shot in our search. Thanks. Steve Payne"
!REFERENCE: Mar-2004 emails from <rbrewer5@yahoo.com> to Don Braffitt, "We saw your lineage regarding Joseph Payne/Sena Crumbley with Dr. Isaac B. Payne. My great great grandmother was Georgia Ann L. Payne who married Seaborn Jackson. (some places Saborn J.) Taylor of Wilkinson County, Georgia. ... In 1883, Seaborn J. Taylor became the guardian for four orphan children of Joseph B. Payne. Their names were: Sena Payne, Mattie Payne, Isaac B. Payne and Ella Payne. This is a legal document: Admin. Papers, page 462, W. C. Georgia. ... Eliz. We found the connection this week. The children were the younger brother and sisters of Georgia A. Payne (Taylor). This info was secured from a "short genealogy" in a clemency record (fr: Ga. Archives) found while researching another surname in Laurens County. The record states: "The way this relationship comes about, - Ransome Paine (Payne) and Joe Paine (Joseph B. Payne) were brothers... Joe (Joseph Payne) Payne was the father of Ransome and Joe Paine. Joe Paine (Joseph Payne) was the common ancestor... His son Joe Paine (Joseph B. Payne) was the father of Georgia (married Seaborn Jackson Taylor)." We are still trying to connect our "Georgia Payne" to the Robert Ashley....no luck! ... Eliz."
