!REFERENCE: 23-Apr-2009 obituary for father Norman Robert Veroneau, Sr., Margaret Braffitt, "Norman Robert Veroneau, Sr., April 23, 2009, Sanford. Norman R. Veroneau, Sr., 79, life-long resident of the Sanford/Springvale area died peacefully surrounded by his children on April 23, 2009 at the Greenwood Center. He was born at home in Springvale on September 4, 1929 a son of Francis and Marie (Jansen) Veroneau and attended Notre Dame Catholic School. Norman served his country from 1947 – 1949 with the United States Marines upon the USS Iowa and the USS Ohio. He received several commendations and the sharpshooter metal while stationed in Cuba. Upon his honorable discharge with the Marines, Norman met his future wife at Liggets Drug Store in Portsmouth, NH, Catherine "Kay" Collins and was married on January 16, 1950 in Kittery, Maine. From an early age, Norman knew the value of hard work. He was a mechanic and was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and retired from Brooks Woolen Mill at the age of 62. He was one who always had a second job to make sure his family of eight children had what they needed growing up. Norman was a life member of the Amvets and a member of the VFW. He was a volunteer for 45 years at the Rochester Bingo Hall. Mr. Veroneau was an avid fan of the New England Patriots and his beloved Red Sox. While stationed in Boston, he saw Ted Williams and Johnny Pesky play. Norman was comfortable in the kitchen and looked forward to Sunday’s when his family would come home and they would share stories and reminisce about the "good ole days." He enjoyed going to the beach for seafood and his morning coffee and donut. Norman was a kind, gentle man with a big heart who loved his family and was the first one to laugh at his own jokes. His blue eyes twinkled when he smiled. He is survived by children, Margaret Braffitt and husband Bob of Sanford; Helen Gosselin and husband Bob of Acton; Kathy LeBlanc and husband Pat of Springvale; Maureen Menter and longtime boyfriend Jim Jeannette of Sanford; Donna Hall and husband John of Sanford; Michael Veroneau and girlfriend Lisa Seavey of Sanford; Joyce Veroneau and longtime boyfriend Pete Deyo of Sanford; his sister, Pauline Huntress of Shapleigh; his friend of many years, Brenda Staples of Sanford; 12 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 48 years, Catherine "Kay" Veroneau in 1998, his son, Robert "Bobby" Veroneau, Jr. in 1990 and by his grandson, Norman R. Veroneau, III in 2008. A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Notre Dame Cemetery in Springvale with Br. Ted Ledentre, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the David’s Fund, York County Federal Credit Union, 1516 Main Street, Sanford, ME 04073. This fund was established to assist families with funeral options and named in memory of his grandson, David R. Vernoneau, III. The Autumn Green Funeral Home, 47 Oak Street in Alfred is respectfully handling arrangements."
